As leading producers of certified organic wines in Australia we are committed to sustainability in both the vineyards and in winemaking practices to ensure our legacy as environmental stewards lives on for future generations.
VINEYARDS
We view the vineyards as more than just the source of our grapes.
It is a holistic system of interconnected organic prosperity. The vine is important, but it is the health of the entire environment that provides the best tasting organic grapes.
ORGANIC
Pure & clean
At no stage during the grape growing and winemaking of Naturalis Organic wines have we used any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilisers or inputs of any kind. Everything we use comes from nature, pure and clean.
HEALTHY BIODIVERSITY
Honeybee
The humble honeybee is vital to the local flora and fauna that thrive in our organic vineyards. Here, organic and biodynamic farming techniques ensure healthy biodiversity in the vineyard and pure, delicious organically sourced wines in the glass.
1
Native Plants
We have planted 700 indigenous trees and shrubs at our vineyard in McLaren Vale and 4700 at the winery to provide a habitat for native fauna and enhance our biodiversity, which can increase the productivity of the vineyard. They also act as a carbon sink, offsetting our emissions, and at the winery are repairing a salt scald and recycling winery wastewater.
2
River System
We are located on Australia’s largest river system and are signatories to RAMSAR, working to protect and improve the wetlands found at our vineyard.
3
Animals
We encourage microbats to live among the native gums surrounding our vines as a way of naturally controlling pest insect species. Our wild bee colony and our managed beehives contribute to the organic management of the vineyard by acting as insect security guards, making the beneficial insects feel safe and protected and encouraging them to stay and defend the vineyard.
Our resident Indian Runner ducks are also on parade during the wetter months of the year helping to control the snail population, that if left unchecked, make their way into the canopy to munch on the new buds and young soft shoots. Additionally, kangaroos and emus can often be seen in the vineyard gently bounding or strolling amongst the vines.4
Compost
Organic agriculture and synthetic fertilisers cannot work together. We use organic compost to add nutrition and enrich our soils to ensure they are growing the most flavourful wines possible.
5
Cover Crops
In our vineyard we grow cover crops that help prevent erosion, provide beneficial insect habitat and improve soil fertility including medics that contribute nitrogen and nutrients to the soil.
Weeds and native plants are a natural part of organic viticulture and we embrace their presence as they provide an alternate habitat for insects that may potentially attack and live on the vine. These habitats also encourage beneficial insects that suppress the pest insects.6
Weed Control
Our team designed an undervine mower to help control weeds in our mature vineyards whilst in the young blocks we weed by hand and extensively mulch.
7
Efficient energy use and Power generation
We work tirelessly to reduce carbon emissions and minimise our impact on the environment including the installation of solar panels at the winery and cellar door, lower tractor use in the vineyard, gas fired furnaces and energy efficient pumps.
8
A closed loop
All of the packaging we use is made entirely or partly from recycled materials and in itself is 100% recyclable. We are signatories to the Australian Packing Covenant and work to reduce packaging waste wherever possible.
9
Winery
We harvest during the cool of the morning to preserve flavour and prevent oxidation. With just the gentlest touch the organic grapes are taken to our winery where they are carefully pressed with only the free run and soft press juice being retained for Naturalis Organic wines.
10
Lightweight packaging
Our bottles are light, up to 28% lighter in fact, reducing the energy required to transport. It also means there is up to 20% less energy and CO2 emissions created during making them and 12% less water used. They are 100% recyclable and better for the Planet.
11
Recycling
Nothing goes to waste. Water in the winery is recycled and pumped to a woodlot that provides a “carbon sink” and habitat for native birds and other animals. The skins, stalks and seeds left after the grapes are pressed are turned into compost for the vineyards.
12
Vegan friendly
All of the Naturalis range of organic wines are certified vegan by Vegan Australia. No animal products were used in the crafting of the Naturalis Organic wines.
