Celebrate Australian Organic Awareness Month

September is Australian Organic Awareness Month and as a Silver Sponsor we thought it timely to remind everyone of the reasons we choose to make so many of our wines according to Certified Organic principles and practices.

No Synthetic inputs or artificial chemicals
Certified Organic Wine is wine that has been made without any synthetic chemical inputs like fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. As no synthetic chemicals are used at any stage in the organic winemaking process, no nasty chemical residue is left on the plants or in the surrounding groundwater soil – reducing chemical runoff into drinking water and coastal areas and maintaining soil integrity. Furthermore, without the synthetic chemical inputs the vines themselves are healthier and more resilient. Certified Organic wines also have less sulphites.

It’s better for the biodiversity of the environment

At Angove Family Winemakers, we strive to be a world leader in sustainable practices that encourage biodiversity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and landfill. Our goal is to always ensure that the natural ecosystems of our vineyards are thriving, and that we are nurturing the environment for future generations.

Our vineyards attract many native species to the area including insects, bats and birds. A study by the Soil Association found that organic farms attract up to 50 percent more plants, birds and native wildlife than conventional farms. We even have some feathered ‘employees’- Indian Runner Ducks- that work alongside our human employees to maintain our Certified Organic status by naturally controlling pests including snails that make their way into the vine canopy and munch on the new grapes.

A deeper, richer flavour

It is only natural that when the vine is healthier, the fruit it produces will be as well. We have found a better depth of flavour in grapes from our Organically Certified vineyards which in turn results in wines with deeper, richer flavours.

It’s vegan

Angove Organic’s award-winning range of Certified Organic Wines are 100% vegan. We do not use any animal-based fining products or tested inputs in the winemaking process.

Many people think that all wine is vegan, however many conventional wines are made using animal-derived fining-agents. These fining-agents are used to remove protein and yeast from the wine and can include milk, egg whites and isinglass-made from the float bladder of the sturgeon fish.

Certified Organic Bud label gives consumers peace of mind
Certified Organic wines and natural wines may sound similar, but in fact they are completely different types of wines. Certified Organic winemaking must follow a strict set of guidelines with accreditation only achieved after a rigorous three-year assessment process. Certified Organic winemakers are also audited every year to ensure the highest standards are continuously adhered to. In contrast, there are no rules, protocols, certifications or guidelines surrounding natural winemaking. The Certified Organic Bud label reassures consumers that they are buying an authentic organic product and we are proud to display the Bud logo on all our Certified Organic wine.
